Swine Flu Highlights Need for Districts to be Prepared
for Pandemic

The Swine Flu outbreak has made headlines with its threat of becoming a pandemic in North America. School districts should be prepared for the possibility of the Swine Flu becoming a pandemic and spreading to students and staff.

Prepared Response offers a Pandemic Influenza/Bio-Emergency Awareness and Planning course for school districts. The course examines elements of a comprehensive pandemic response plan, including prevention, continuity of learning and continuity of operations. In addition to an overview of the four phases of emergency management, the course explains the World Health Organizations alert system and how it relates to the National Response Plan. Also, the course provides school personnel information about biological emergencies, including the history of pandemic influenza, the outbreak in 1918 and the current H5N1 “avian influenza” pandemic alert. At the end of the course, participants should have the knowledge and tools to begin collaboration towards the development of a basic infectious disease response plan.

Eighteen school districts throughout the country have gone through this informative course offered by Prepared Response. To learn more about this course and other courses provided by Prepared Response, please contact training@preparedresponse.com for more information.

Rapid Responder used during Hazardous Materials Leak
Firefighters responded to a reported gas leak at an elementary school in Washington state. There was a strong odor of natural gas in the area and the school was quickly evacuated. Since this was early in the morning, the school was not yet occupied with children. Rapid Responder was accessed and provided tactical plans and contingency plans which were quickly initiated. Arriving children were sheltered in school buses and parents were notified of the emergency. The fire hazardous materials team monitored the air inside and outside the school. Once it was confirmed the air inside the school was safe, students and staff were allowed to enter the school.

This incident shows how Rapid Responder can be used for any number of emergencies. By providing the fire department with quick access to emergency plans, the school district and first responders were able to immediately provide a safe place for students to stay during the leak.
